Artwork + Design:
"I use a combination of hand sketching + graphics to create the artwork. Simultaneously I design the neon glass tubes and plan how they will be overlaid on the artwork. The neon design also has to meet various electrical and mechanical design constraints."
"High grade natural aluminium sheet is used for both the front and rear panels of the artwork. Aluminium is incredibly strong yet light and won't degrade or rust over time. The sheets are mechanically polished to my exact specification, which gives a semi reflective finish. They reflect the neon lights as well as the ambient light in the surrounding room, which gives amazing depth to the art."
"After the aluminium is polished, it is sent to an anodising plant for surface treatment, which makes the soft aluminium surface much harder. This prevents superficial scratches, marks and fingerprints on the aluminium surface during its lifetime. It's a process used by high end consumer brands such as Apple and Bang & Olufsen on their aluminium products."
"The hand crafted frame is made from solid oak, which ages well and provides real robustness and strength. The oak is FSC certified from sustainable sources. "
Glass Neon Tubes:
"Coloured Murano glass tubes of different diameter and colour are shaped by hand using various gas torches to create the neon glass design."
Neon + Argon Gas:
"The glass tubes are filled with a combination of Noble gases (Neon & Argon) and sealed in using a gas torch. "
"High Voltage electrodes are fused into each end of the glass neon tubes. The high voltage applied to the electrodes causes the gas sealed inside the tube to emit coloured light. "
