Artist Statement: When I was asked to contribute to Peles 75th birthday art exhibition at the Halcyon Gallery, the first thing that came to mind was Warhol’s “athletes” series, so I created a homage to Warhol as well as Pele. The main image came from a 1972 advert for Puma football boots and Spalding handler football - both of which were endorsed at the time by Pele. He was the first sportsman to become a global brand and he embraced sponsorship on a level that had not been previously seen. The neon represents his global appeal and No10 shirt. The title references Warhols quote: “Pele was one of the few who contradicted my theory: instead of 15 minutes fame, he will have 15 centuries. “
